Sensei Walker has studied karate since December 1991, and began teaching at the rank of Blue Belt in 1993 while under the instruction of Master Rick Hall. Currently holding the rank of 5th Dan, Sensei Walker’s lifetime dream of training in the martial arts and passing that experience on to others has culminated in his appearance in many local television programs teaching such fundamentals as child safety to parents and abduction prevention and awareness to high-schoolers, teaching at over three dozen seminars about rape prevention, “stranger danger,” and environmental awareness to seniors (how not to be a target). He has also instructed law enforcement and military personnel in combat and self defense training.
Sensei Walker brings over three decades of experience to the Aurora area and may be counted upon to act as a role model for the city’s younger citizens as well as a teacher for adults who wish to learn the discipline and freedom of Okinawan Matsumura Shorin Ryu karate.
An avid student, Sensei Walker constantly seeks opportunities to further his knowledge of the martial arts. In pursuit of this knowledge he’s attended the USKK National Convention since 1993 where he’s had the opportunity to learn from some of the finest karate-ka in the world—even those outside of Matsumura Shorin Ryu. Among those Masters he’s trained with are Takayoshi Nagamine, Patrick McCarthy, Major Doug Perry, Major Bill Hayes and many more.
A long-time friendship with Grand Master Koeppel has resulted in Sensei Walker’s MCing the USKK International Convention every year since 1994. While there, Sensei Walker competes in the kumite event
and earned the National Championship Award every year between 1998 and 2005,
winning first place in 2003 & 2004.
Following in the tradition of those before him, Sensei Walker has added his own contribution to the Matsumura Shorin Ryu system by way of creating the Pinan flow drills. These drills enhance the quality of karate training by exposing students to an interpretation of the Pinan katas and how to apply them in real situations.
Most recently Sensei Walker was accepted as a student of Master John Hutchcroft in his quest for knowledge of Okinawan Karate and the Matsumura Shorin Ryu.
